2 day workshop – shading on canvas
Mere photographs cannot begin to capture the visual impact of this
spectacular composition. Two white poinsettias are placed against
soft blue Congress cloth, their petals graduating from the crisp sparkle
of a winter morning to the pale, satiny saturation of spring growth yet to
come. Enhancing the silken petals are holly leaves outlined in
silver bullion and painted in class with metallic paint marker.
Backing the flowers are two bands of shadow stitching done with a darker
value of the ground color.

Class with Deborah Tirico
Born and raised in Hartford Connecticut, Deborah was educated as a graphic designer. She turned to quilting when the graphic design profession became digital. In 1993 she took her first quilt class at the local high school and the rest is history. Her skill set longed for the precision, color and measuring work she used as a traditional graphic designer and quilting used these skills, providing the hands-on creative outlet she once enjoyed in her professional life.
Since 1993 Deborah has been an avid quilter and needle artist. She has studied appliqué with Elly Sienkiewicz, Jane Townswick, Judy Severson, Anne Connery, Mimi Dietrich, Jennifer Bucheal, Judith Shapiero, and Ellen Heck among others.
A serious student, Deborah has taken classes in embroidery, piecework, hand and machine quilting. Her quilts have been awarded for excellence and in 1998 she began teaching. She is an avid member of the EGA, the Appliqué Society and the American Quilting Society. Deborah has taught classes in felted wool appliqué at EGA chapters, quilt guilds and shops. She teaches appliqué, hand quilting and her own designs in felted wool appliqué. Deborah continues to study embroidery and appliqué with national teachers.
At this class we will be taught Deborah’s technique of felted wool appliqué. This includes the following skills:
Felting wool Discussion on felting and recycling wool will encourage students to make their own wool for appliqué and other creative applications through recycling clothing or felting yardage.
Pattern making Freezer paper methods in pattern making will illustrate effective methods. Students will learn simplified techniques using available household products.
Stitches Students will learn appliqué techniques using the tack stitch. A unique method for using the needle on a slant provides for a sculpting of the wool to create a dimension to the work. A new method for the blanket stitch will also be illustrated.
We will meet at Duncaster for this class, and the times for the day will be 10am to 3 pm. When registering, please choose one of the following kits:
