Annual Meeting In Granby Uncovers Hidden Gems
The CRVC annual meeting April 21 in Granby was lightly attended, but those who came (including people from the shoreline) had a fine time, from the varied and informative textiles/crafts tour of the Salmon Brook Historical Society to the dessert sampling at Adi’s restaurant.
Docents Jean Potetz, Ginny Wutka, Patty Sansone, and Lucille Ladden took us through a surprising number of dresses, quilts (crazy and otherwise) and redwork coverlets, lace collars, table covers, samplers, knitted items, and crocheted items (we will never forget the circle of swans). A fabric book titled "Grandma’s Outline Pictures" and labeled "Indestructible" was full of charming embroidered outlines of the sort seen in redwork. Incidentals such as a collection of sewing notions and a 19th century needlework reference book graced tables in the rooms we visited in the historic Weed-Enders and Abijah Rowe houses. And there were two amazingly large "floral" displays under glass made of human hair, a popular craft in Victorian times. The docents took turns telling the stories of the items and of the people associated with them, taking us back to the early days of the town, and underlining the importance of donating items back to their places of origin if they can’t be kept in the family.
A real treat was the visit to the textile rooms in the Preservation Barn. These climate-controlled rooms were created in anticipation of receiving the large Polly Hall quilt collection. The outer room is for inspecting new donations and cleaning anything that has been outside the rooms; the society rotates the quilts and dresses on display in the main houses and the cleaning ensures that no bugs go into storage with the textiles. The inner room is for storage, with the most fragile items in archival tissue and boxes, and quilts either layered on "beds" or folded (each in its own muslin sheet) on shelves.
Local historian Carol Laun told us about the early Hays family (descendants still farm in town) and especially the daughters of Seth Hays, who attended Sarah Pierce’s Litchfield Female Academy around the turn of the 19th century and created some wonderful silk embroideries and paintings. Two of the embroideries, by Melissa and Hilpah, were unboxed for us to admire. We also saw a number of quilts, and observed the unwrapping of a new donation: dozens of crochet pattern samples basted into a book, with newspaper and handwritten instructions tucked in.
Then it was off to Granby’s newest restaurant, Adi’s. Our sensible and delicious salads, salmon, and caprese sandwiches were totally undone when the executive chef visited our table and recommended the dessert specials. We opted for a sampling to share around, a tiramisu (light as a cloud), a chocolate torte (intense), and the gelato quattro (four chef-made gelatos with flavors like sauterne-macadamia and raspberry-St Germain), and the chef threw in a complimentary crème brulee. Perfect ending to a lovely day!

Gathering for Winter Etui with Betsy
Morgan
Level: Intermediate
"Gathering for Winter" is an acorn-themed etui which is cylinder
shaped with a lid which slides on a cord and is secured with bead and loop closures.
Four "smalls" are tucked inside - a scissor fob and scissor sheath, a pin
cushion which mimics the shape of the etui box and a needle book.
This etui was inspired by the turned wooden acorn which
embellishes the end of the closure cord. One of these acorns will be included in each
kit. They are hand made by Sylvan Treasures and come in a variety of
exotic woods. Students will be able to choose from the many colors of the
different woods.
The students will pre-stitch the thimble holder, which
involves 2-3 hours of stitching time, and we will then construct the pin cushion during
class. Making the pin cushion will give students all of the
information they need in order to construct the etui box. The construction
of the rest of the "smalls" as well as the ribbon binding will be covered in
class and there will also be a demonstration of making cords and tassels.
Counted thread stitches will be covered as needed.
All of the counted thread work is done on 32-count Light Mocha
Belfast linen and is stitched in pearl cotton and numerous Gloriana hand dyed silk
flosses. The etui box and all of the smalls, except the scissor fob,are
lined in copper silk Dupioni. The needle book includes wool felt pages and
a ribbon binding and the pin cushion is filled with wool felt.
Stitches include: cross, cross over one, double running, back,
queen, four sided, woven cross, Irish, satin, Smyrna cross, eyelet, detached buttonhole,
Hedebo buttonhole and French knot.

Mark and Paint on Canvas and Fabric
(Teacher: Laura Smith) Do you have a drawing or photo that you’d like to make into an embroidered design? In this class, you will mark and paint one design onto needlepoint canvas and one onto silk fabric. Step-by-step instructions are given for painting with acrylic paint and fabric paint or dye (including using resist). The importance of using markers and paint that conform to archival quality standards for fabrics is emphasized. An appendix gives details about specific products and sources. Students may use the three provided designs, but are encouraged to create their own. The annotated bibliography includes design and drawing books, but this class will not teach drawing per se. The goal of this course is for students to feel confident and competent to transfer designs to fabric or canvas with markers and paint. After you complete the course, the text becomes a reference manual that you’ll use over and over again. Students are encouraged to work in groups to share supplies, but the course may be taken by individuals. |
