lunch afterwards. Friday & Saturday, January 31 & February 1, 2014 "Winter In The Forest" – Lynn Payette (A Foley/Cornelius Teacher) This is the piece that we all admired at the December class with Lynn. Fabrics – sheers, shinys, and opaques – will be layered and stitched on a soft gray-lavender 18 ct. canvas to create the reflections and shadows from trees on both the snow and the stream. These will be overstitched with a variety of fibers, threads, and metallics. Novelty threads and yarns, as well as flosses and pearl cottons (#5, 8, and 12), and pantyhose, will be used to create the trees. Slender, ‘finger like’ branches, behind and in front of other trees, give the necessary perspective to the design. Stitches used will be couching, back stitch, whipped back stitch (worked to create the gnarled look of branches), and outline stitch. The trees have an extremely realistic look to them, as the fibers used will mimic bark. Note: Pantyhose is an incredible fiber to use for stitching. All sorts of things can be done with it, from snipping in at the edges to create branches, to stretching it and stitching with it. The stream running through the forest will be created using a variety of opaque, shiny, and sheer fabrics. These will be stitched down with flosses, invisible thread, pearl cottons, and metallic fibers after the student studies the ‘light source’ for the piece. Again, the placement of these will be the student’s choice. The stitches used will be couching, back stitch (with and without whipping), and outline. The beginnings and endings of the fabrics will be cleverly hidden within the edges of the tree trunks, branches, and the edges of the stream. A buildup of stitches for dimension, perspective, and effect will be taught. There will be a heavy amount of attention given to this, as it is a necessary component of the design.
The pattern for this piece will be drawn on the canvas, and the student will work from that. It will not be charted, as the student will need to place stitches, fibers, etc. over fabrics, and the canvas will not show through all the fabrics. This will create a unique challenge to the canvas worker. I have used this method of stitching with canvas workers before, and the results and enthusiasm are incredible. PRICE OF KIT: $85.00 The deadline for signing up for this class is December 15th.

NER is proud to present two fantastic classes taught by
outstanding, internationally-known teachers, plus studio time for those choosing to
continue working on an existing project, for Region Day 2013. NER is again
underwriting a significant portion of the costs (teaching fees, teacher travel,
room rental, and lunch) for this event, making this day an exceptional
educational bargain at this price. The hardest part is choosing which
class to take!
This year, Region “Day” is a bit little different. Gary Clarke,
who joins us as part of the International Teaching Tour organized by National,
will be teaching a two-day class on Saturday and Sunday. Our other
teacher, Joni Stevenson, will be teaching a one-day class on Saturday.
Studio Time will also be offered on Saturday only.
The Fine Print
Classes begin at 9:00 in the morning and end at 4:30 in the afternoon.
There will be a break for lunch and the teachers may be offering kits and other
unique items for sale after the end of classes. Because Gary is
traveling from Tasmania, Australia, extra time is required for shipping supplies
to the US. This means the registration deadline for his class will
be June 15, 2013. Gary Clarke, Desert Fan,

Class Description: This project is not hard in itself
although I have marked it advanced, it is however challenging in the scale of work
needed. I know that each student will improve in the execution of the work
as it progresses; therefore, I include a sample piece to work on before getting
into the larger design. The base fabric is a Japanese organza stretched
over a wooden frame. The thread used is primarily one strand of six
stranded cotton. There is further embellishment of beads.
Kit Contents: Mounted organza, stretcher bars, needle book,
instructions, photographs, patterns, pre-printed panel, paper fan, beads,
threads, stretcher bars, DVD.
Kit Contents: 18 count white canvas, color washed pink, Canvas,
congress cloth, cotton, silk, synthetic and metallic threads, beads, colored
netting, lutrador, and complete instructions to finish project.
Student supplies: One pair of 9” stretcher bars, One pair of 12”
stretcher bars, One pair 4” stretcher bars, One pair 6” stretcher bars, Scissors
for cutting threads, Laying tool, Light and Magnification if needed, Pencil or

Studio Time is for you! Bring one (or more) of your works in progress and

NER will be sponsoring three Group Correspondence Courses per year. Registration will be approximately every four months. The cost of the class is $40.00, which includes the $33.50 text fee and the $6.50 postage fee. You will receive a 44-page instruction booklet. You are responsible for providing all other supplies.
