Saturday, April 21st - ANNUAL
MEETING
Trip to Salmon Brook Historical Society in Granby and
Lunch
The program that the historical society has arranged for us will include the following:
A viewing of two silk embroideries made by sisters Hilpah and Melissa Hays in 1803 while they attended the Litchfield Female Academy. Not usually on display, they will be taken out of storage so our members can view them.
A bed-turning of quilts held in the historic Abijah Rowe House, circa 1732. Embroidered redwork, crazy quilts and others will be included, along with examples of fine quilting.
A viewing of samplers in the Rowe House and an exhibit of various pieces of handwork set up especially for the Connecticut River Valley Embroiderers Guild. They understand that our interests cover most forms of needlework including fine crochet and knitting.
A display of vintage ladies gowns, including a lace wedding gown from the late 1930s.
The morning program will last two hours, and the fee is $15/person.
The deadline for signing up for this trip is April 10th. A coupon for registration is at the end of this newsletter.
What price education?
What does it cost CRVC to bring in nationally known teachers? Where does this money come from? What is a Foley/Cornelius teacher?
Their
teaching fees run between $250 to $375 per day. Transportation from
distant states runs about $400 or more, plus baggage fees. Usually a
member will provide housing which avoids that expense, but we pay for some
meals. It is costing us at least $1,000 for non-local teachers or $50 per
student IF we could get 20 students (unlikely). In order to provide the
highest quality teachers, the CRVC Board has chosen to underwrite the teaching
fees, meals, and much of the transportation. We charge members only for
their kits and a small class fee to help with transportation if the teacher is
not local.
Over the years CRVC has earned money
from Seminars, the sale of our collection, fundraising, and recently, the sale
of donated materials. We have accumulated a respectable sum. We have
cut our administrative expenses to a bare minimum (mainly website and
newsletter) and obtained rent-free meeting locations. The $15 per member
we receive in local dues (the rest goes to EGA and the New England Region) more
than covers these expenses. Since our main mission is education, the Board
feels that the best and fairest way to spend our surplus is by subsidizing class
expenses. We are decreasing our surplus by about $1,000 per year.
The families of Cele Foley and
Rosemary Cornelius graciously donated embroidery books and materials to
CRVC. Many of the items were sold to raise money for our chapter adding to
the accumulated amount, mentioned above. It was decided that using those
funds for educational purposes would be very appropriate. To remember
these donors, you will see a notation when some of these monies are being used
to offer classes by nationally known teachers.

You can add your mother, grandmother, great grandmother and back for 5 generations or you can make one with just your immediate family. The tree is stitched on 32 count antique white linen with black silk threads. Three sizes of black thread is used to shade the design. Gold thread is added for a special sparkle. Shading is achieved by using both pattern and thread. You will learn how to create the paths for double running and why some blackwork patterns are not reversible.
Goals:
To learn how to chart your own paths for double running and how to create shading using thread size and stitch density.
