The Nominating Committee is preparing a slate of officers for election at the April 5, 2014, annual meeting.  We especially need a candidate for Secretary, which has been vacant since April, 2013.  The Secretary must be able to attend the Board meetings (listed below), take notes, and compile and distribute the minutes of each meeting.  It is an excellent (and relatively easy) way to serve CRVC.  Anyone interested should contact Kathryn Lord at hglord@cox.net before March 15.

Please note:  Those members who did not sign up for the Lynn Payette class are invited to bring some other project to work on in studio time.  You are most welcome to sign up for lunch on one or both days.

Friday & Saturday, January 31st & February 1st

"Little Quail" – Lynn Payette (A Foley/Cornelius Teacher)

‘Little Quail’ is a non-charted design created with the use of sheer and opaque fabrics, silk ombre ribbons, metallic threads, floss, and stump-work techniques.  Student will make the decisions for the placement of stitches and colors of the leaves.

Techniques will be demonstrated for the stitching and application of sheer and opaque fabrics (using a bonding technique with a product called Wonder Under, a fusible web).  Some of the leaves will be superimposed on the ground fabric after being wired (between two layers of bonded fabric) and will curve out from the piece in the student’s choice of placement.  Some of the leaves will be bonded directly to the ground and then overstitched.  This will give a 3-D effect around and partially over the quail, and the leaves bonded to the ground fabric.

Also taught will be the overstitching of fabrics with threads, working with novelty and metallic threads, and creating a color scheme that demonstrates cast shadows and perspective.  The wheat is created with pearl cotton and metallic threads in whipped back and straight stitches.

The quail’s body and head will be stitched separately on muslin, and then applied to the ground fabric with padding created with one to two layers of felt.  Long and short stitch will be worked on the upper breast of the quail, and buttonhole stitch for the lower breast.  The quail’s head is worked in a variety of stitches, including satin stitch, outline stitch and whipped outline stitch, chain stitch, French knots, and beading.

This piece allows the student to experience the use of a wide variety of media, and will have a heavy emphasis on creating perspective and shadows with the use of threads, metallics, beads and fabrics.  The student will also learn to recreate an object (quail) using stitches to create photographic realism.  ‘Little Quail’ is the first piece in a bird theme series.

Saturday, April 5th

Please hold this date for our annual meeting.  It will take place at Thistle Needleworks.

The Flowers That Bloom In The Spring, Tra La...........

Begin with a three and a half inch circle surrounding a design painted on a 5" square of 18-mesh sage green canvas.  Dip into a stash of threads of all colors and fiber contents that cover the table in front of you.  Thread a needle and let your creativity take over – voila~!~  Not “into” canvaswork?  That’s all right – decorative surface stitches will work just as well.  Or you can turn the canvas over and use the blank side of the canvas.  If you need more inspiration, the chapter library will be right there for you to reference.

We will stitch our hearts out in the morning and participants will be encouraged to share stitching ideas and lots of stitching stories – do come with one or more to share with the group...........

In the afternoon, after lunch and a brief business meeting – our official annual meeting – we will talk about finishing ideas for the pieces begun in the morning.  Members will go home with a partially stitched piece (some more completely stitched than others - that’s OK) and some ideas for how to use them.

Finally, there will be an incentive to finish your piece begun this day – a variety of valuable (really!) prizes will be awarded to the ones voted the most creative, most colorful, best use of stitches, and the best use of threads, by the members voting online from all the photos we will post on the CRVC web site.

There will be a kit fee of $10 for the materials for this program, and lunch will be at a local restaurant (buy your own).

The most recently received book donations for our Foley/Cornelius Fund Stash Sale will be available for purchase at this meeting.

A coupon for registration is at the end of this newsletter.

The bottom section of this sampler is monochromatic and is worked using two weights of cream silk to enhance the texture and design.

Needlework Tool Case (Teacher: Mary Long)

This small needlework tool case is a quick-to-stitch canvaswork project suitable for the basic intermediate to intermediate stitcher.

One of the goals of the project is to provide students with an opportunity to select their own color schemes.  The colors of the overdyed ribbon chosen will guide the choice of other colors, threads, and canvas.  Stitchers could also use the model colors and threads.  These threads include Elegance™, Splendor™, Gloriana™ ribbon, and YLI® ribbon.

Stitches used include several different cross stitches, upright cross stitches, eyelets, Smyrna cross stitches, straight stitches, tent stitches, and back stitches.

The compartments and cording for the finished tool case could be a nice gift for a stitching friend or it could even be a useful addition to your stitching things!
