New England Region Day 2014
Saturday, September 27
A Day in Portsmouth, New Hampshire

NER is excited to offer a delightful day trip for this year’s Region Day.  Portsmouth is the hub of the New Hampshire seacoast.  Its downtown streets are reminiscent of a small English market village.  Originally a working seaport where merchant ships traveled up and down the Piscataqua River, it’s still a working port, where tugboats can be seen escorting ships through the treacherous currents of this tidal river.

We will begin the day with a visit to John Paul Jones House Museum.  John Paul Jones, colonial America’s first sea warrior, was a tenant of the Widow Purcell in this house in1781 while he supervised the building of the Navy’s ship America nearby.  His house is now the museum of Portsmouth men, women and children, where their stories live.  In small groups, we will be able to view their exceptional needlework collection as well as the house itself.  You're invited to join us 1 mile across the bridge into Kittery, ME where we will enjoy a sit-down lunch at Warren's Lobster House.  If you choose to attend, please select your desired entree when you register.  If you prefer to eat on your own, know that there are several restaurants in the area.  After lunch, members are encouraged to explore other interesting sites that Portsmouth and Kittery have to offer.  For example, Strawbery Banke Museum, in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is an authentic 10-acre outdoor history museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dedicated to bringing 300+ years of American history to life.  (Admission to the museum is $17.50 for adults).

Schedule
9:30 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.  Tour Museum and Needlework collection at John Paul Jones House
12:00 p.m.  Lunch at Warren’s Lobster House

Costs
NER is underwriting the admission to the John Paul Jones House.  The registration fee of $20.00 is for lunch.

If you would like to tour the John Paul Jones House, you must register so we can advise them of the number of people to expect, even if you will not be joining us for lunch.

Thank Goodness It’s Finished
(Teacher: Kim Sanders)

Are your beautiful embroideries languishing in a drawer awaiting a trip to the finisher?  Finishing the embroidery yourself gives you complete control over the end product and could be less expensive than using professional finishing services.  Thank Goodness It’s Finished teaches a variety of skills needed to assemble embroideries into their final form.  Following evaluation, Certificates of Completion will be awarded for finishing the scissors tassel, small drawstring bag, pincushion and either the stitched box or tote bag (both may be submitted).  Only the tote bag requires use of a sewing machine.

Although students are encouraged to use their existing embroideries for this GCC, they may construct the course items from unembroidered fabric. Patterns for the pictured sample pieces and brief embroidery instructions are also provided in the text.  However, the focus of this GCC is on finishing techniques, so no embroidery is required for a Certificate of Completion.

Thank Goodness It’s Finished text is thoroughly illustrated with clear drawings as well as written directions.  Once the student has finished the items in the course, the same techniques can be applied to similar items.  For example the student will be able to construct a full-sized pillow using the techniques learned when making the pin cushion.
