Saturday, December 7th, 2019     “Elegant Diamond” Box
                                                                                        Designed by Denise Pratt

At this meeting we will begin to stitch this beautiful box, following Denise’s clear diagrams and directions.  She will prepare colors for the kits based on your preferences as noted on the registration coupon with lots of possibilities, not just those shown above.  The primary diamond color is worked in variegated floss weight silk, such as Waterlilies or Silk ‘n Colors, and the effects are so much fun to produce.  It may happen that we construct the box at the February meeting, unless you need to complete it as a holiday gift.

Supplies to bring to class:    Design may be worked in hand, but a 6”- 8” hoop or 5” & 6” stretcher bars
   are an option
Scissors
Light and magnification if necessary

Location:  Thistle Needleworks in Wethersfield, CT
Schedule for Saturday:
10 AM to 10:30 AM         Board meeting
10:30 to 12:30 PM   Begin stitching on piece
12:30 to 1:30 PM   Lunch, Show and Tell, and short meeting
1:30 to 3:30 PM   Continued stitching

A coupon is provided for this meeting.

Saturday, February 1st, 2020 (Snow date: February 8 th at Seabury)

We will plan to construct the box with the completed stitching at this meeting.

Saturday, April 4th, 2020 (Annual Meeting)

We will hold elections this year.  Deb Milvae is looking for nominees for some positions.  Please contact her or any board member if you’d like to step up.  All of our Board meetings are before regular meetings so it doesn’t take that much time to take part.

The program for this meeting is still to be determined.  We’d love your input if there is a topic, class or field trip that you’d like to suggest.

Saturday, June 6th, 2020
Program TBD.

CRVC at Durham Fair’s 100th

Members of the Connecticut River Valley Chapter were part of the Durham (CT) Fair’s 100th anniversary celebration in late September, 2019.

Teams held afternoon stitch-ins on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the Fair, with a small display of their finished pieces in a wide variety of techniques for conversation starters.  We were near the door in the Needlework Building surrounded by ribbon-festooned exhibits, which included pieces by our own Laurie Sulger, who won a red, five blues, and a special pink ribbon for her work.

Fair-goers began stopping at our table as soon as we started unpacking our display, flyers, and free small kits in cross stitch and assisi.  There was a steady flow of the curious – we didn’t get much stitching done, but we had a lot of interesting conversations.  More than 150 kits went to young, old, and in-between willing to give this stitching thing a try; our favorites were those who took two so they could stitch along with a parent or a child.  A good number of our membership flyers were taken as well.

Our thanks go to Debbie Bellemare and the Durham Fair Needlework Committee for inviting us and for a providing a well-run and pleasant experience.  We even tried the chocolate-covered bacon!

A January Outreach Display in Granby

While many modern embroidery exhibits focus on framed pieces for the wall, “Off the Wall Embroidery” returns to its ancient origins to celebrate the art of decorating useful items.  If you would like to contribute any pieces, either bring them to the December meeting (they will be returned at the February meeting) or contact Kathryn Lord at hglord@cox.net to arrange pick-up and drop-off.

We’re looking for the following:  Boxes, trays, coasters.  Pillows, linens, afghans.  Tote bags, clothing, pins.  Ornaments, toys, bookmarks.  And of course, a wide assortment of stitching accessories.  As always, we need the name of the piece, the designer, and the stitcher for the display signage.

We will have two 2-hour stitch-ins while the display is up, Saturday Jan. 11 from 10 am to noon (snow date the 18th) and Wednesday Jan 15 from 1:30 to 3:30 (snow date the 22nd).  The Granby Public Library is at 15 North Granby Road (Route 189).

A Request for Irish embroidery demonstrators………

My name is Sheila Olcott and I am writing on behalf of the Irish Heritage Society of Milford.  We are a nonprofit organization and are planning an Irish Exposition on Saturday, 4/18/2020 at Jonathan Law High School in Milford.  We are planning on having demonstration rooms and was hoping some of the stitchers within your chapter would be interested.  (They are looking for Irish embroidery.)  The expo is from 10am-4pm with entertainment in the evening.  Perhaps you can share this in your newsletter.

Below is a link to our website.  If anyone is interested, they may reach me at my information below.
Thank you!
