December program: Visit to the
Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT
Join us on Saturday, December 7th for a visit to the
Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington,
CT with lunch afterwards at Apricots Restaurant. We'll meet in the
parking lot at the museum at 11:00 am. Lunch will follow at
1:30 pm and you can order off the menu. If you have other commitments,
you are welcome to join us for just the museum tour or the luncheon.
An American Collector's Christmas
Experience Hill-Stead as it looked to American novelist Henry James when
he visited 100 years ago -- "an exquisite palace of peace, light and harmony."
View dozens of objects from the Alfred Atmore Pope Collection, set out for
the holidays and exhibited just once a year. Rarities such as a yellow jasperware
Wedgewood tea set will complement the Morning Room's Chinese porcelain, brass
vases, French Empire andirons, and an Antoine-Louis Barye bronze. In the
dining room, admire the holiday table set for 12 with turn-of-the 20th-century
American cut crystal; a yellow, red and gold Japanese-inspired china set;
and gold candelabras with cut crystal drops. Decorative swags will festoon
the mantles, and green wreaths will accent interior windows. You will notice
many signs of holiday festivities: wrapped gifts beneath ornamented evergreens,
board games underway, and evening frocks laid out in the upstairs bedrooms.
Admission to the museum is $9.00 for adults; $8.00 for seniors.
